F1 Taps Lenovo for Tech Solutions, Services for Singapore Grand Prix

F1 is returning to Singapore, and it's leveraging Lenovo's technological solutions and services to boost the viewing experience for fans at the circuit and off-site.

Lenovo, a technology partner of F1, announced it'll be providing high-performance computing hardware and server solutions for all the F1 races, which would be used for broadcast command and control, including graphics creation, editing and other video applications.

"We need to have military levels of control but also be extremely flexible in bringing in new and cutting-edge technology and production developments," said Pete Samara, Director of Strategic Technical Ventures at F1. "Lenovo is helping us to incorporate innovative technologies into a 100% more reliable, repeatable and efficient operation whilst still accommodating continuous improvement."

F1 is a data-driven sport, with each individual car reportedly generating millions of data points across all races. Lenovo is also supplying the servers, storage, edge and device solutions that would capture these data points and transform them into actionable insights. Data points include G-force numbers, steering angles, brake impact, throttle push and all the audio and video that'll be coming from the various cameras and microphones. The computer maker said it'll be collecting all these data points and feeding it to the broadcast team instantly, so they can track the races in real-time, while delivering an exciting viewing experience for the fans.

Pete Samara added that due to the touring nature of the business, the company will always be hybrid. Some of these data are stored in the cloud, while others must travel with them in order for them to make active decisions.

Ken Wong, Executive VP and President of Solutions and Services Group at Lenovo, stated that his team took into account the applications F1 desired and the data generated by the events when recommending the server infrastructure to be built, whether in the cloud or on-premises. Even with their recommendation though, they wanted to be flexible enough to adjust to other needs that F1 might have. That includes synchronising the Lenovo tech solutions they have on-site at the Event Technical Centre with those from the F1 Media and Technology Centre in Biggin Hill, UK.

Some of the technologies that Lenovo's providing include consumer and business laptops, desktops, monitors, tablets and smartphones, as well as HPC and server solutions. All of these will be given to the necessary F1 employees, from executives to operational engineers, to support operations from the HQ to the track.

In addition, Lenovo's Asset Recovery Service (ARS) helps F1 develop and implement a sustainable disposition strategy for hardware that gets cycled through. The service enabled the F1 to offset some of the cost of technology refresh and guarantee security through reliable data destruction.

F1 would also tap Lenovo for virtual and augmented reality technology as it explores the idea of bringing these sort of experiences to fans in the near future.

Lenovo became one of the F1's technology partners in 2022.
