Member states have been presented with a draft of the regulation outlining the proposed measures, with the possibility of the date being subject to change.

The decision-making process within the bloc faced a slight delay due to last-minute negotiations with Beijing in an attempt to reach a resolution that would avert the implementation of the new levies. The European Commission has not yet responded to requests for comments on the matter.

The European Commission is nearing the proposal of final tariffs reaching as high as 35.3% on electric vehicles produced in China, in addition to the standard 10% import duty imposed by the EU on cars. The final duties will be voted on by the EU's 27 member states and are expected to go into effect by the end of October unless a qualified majority of at least 15 EU members, representing 65% of the EU population, oppose the tariffs.
