Epson Brings a 17kg Cleanroom Robot Arm to Southeast Asia

Epson has launched the AX6 collaborative robot in Southeast Asia, a 17 kilogram arm it describes as the lightest in its class, built for cleanrooms, laboratories and cramped production lines where a conventional industrial arm will not fit.

The weight is the design decision rather than a specification flourish. A carbon body keeps the unit portable enough to move between benches and to mount where a heavier arm would need structural work, which is the difference between automating one station and rebuilding the room around it. At 17 kilograms the arm is in the range a single technician can lift onto a bench, and Epson is selling portability as much as precision.

But the certification is what opens the doors. Epson says the AX6 carries an ISO Class 5 cleanroom classification and IP54 protection against dust and splashes, alongside built in collaborative safety functions that let it work next to people rather than behind a cage. ISO Class 5 is the air quality grade used for sterile filling and semiconductor work, so the arm can be sold into rooms where a standard industrial unit cannot enter.

The teaching method is aimed at the people who will actually set it up rather than at the integrators who usually do the work. The arm supports hand guided teaching and block programming, and it works with development tools including Python and ROS, so a line engineer can move it through a task by hand while a developer writes the more complex behaviour in code.

And the target industries explain the shape of the product. Epson names pharmaceuticals, healthcare, logistics, automotive and electronics manufacturing, all sectors where clean environments and small batches are normal and where a robot has to be redeployed when a product line changes. A light arm that one person can carry to a new bench fits that pattern better than a fixed cell that needs a crane and a week of commissioning.

But the commercial detail that matters for this region is availability. Epson says the AX6 is on sale in Malaysia now, which puts it in front of the electronics and medical device manufacturers that sit along that supply chain, and it is the company's first collaborative robot rather than an addition to an existing range. Epson has sold industrial robots in the region for years, but those are the caged machines that sit behind a fence, and a cobot is a different sale to a different buyer.

So the pitch is accessibility rather than payload. A light arm with simple programming is aimed at factories that have never automated a bench, and the cleanroom rating means it can be sold to the pharmaceutical and laboratory customers who are usually the last to adopt robots.

What Epson has not disclosed is the payload, reach or price, so the comparison with the collaborative arms already sold in the region is not yet possible from company material, and those three figures decide whether the AX6 wins the small and medium manufacturer or stays a specialist tool.
