The company aims to facilitate collaboration and communication between the civil aviation authorities of China and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to accelerate the commercialisation of pilotless aircraft in the region.
Hu Huazhi, the founder, chairman, and CEO of EHang, expressed his excitement about the company's progress, stating, "After securing approval for demo flights with passengers and conducting the first flight, we are poised to continue leading the change of urban air mobility in the UAE and beyond."
EHang recently achieved a significant milestone when its pilotless electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, the EH216-S, successfully completed its first demo flight with passengers in Abu Dhabi. This groundbreaking flight marked the first of its kind in the Middle East.
In addition to the EH216-S, EHang also showcased two other autonomous aircraft models in the UAE. The EH216-F, designed for high-rise firefighting, and the EH216-L, an aerial logistics aircraft, demonstrated the diverse range of applications for pilotless electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in urban air mobility scenarios.
EHang's EH216 series is seen as a transformative solution to address challenges in urban mobility, such as emissions and congestion. The aircraft features a compact fuselage, high redundancy, and intelligent cluster management, ensuring safety, efficiency, and scalability for autonomous and eco-friendly operations.
Working closely with partners and government entities in the UAE, EHang is actively involved in designing and establishing eVTOL vertiports in preparation for the launch of commercial routes. The company has obtained the world's first type certificate, production certificate, and standard airworthiness certificate for passenger-carrying pilotless eVTOL aircraft from the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
To expand its presence in the UAE market, EHang joined the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries Cluster and formed a strategic partnership with Wings Logistics Hub in December. In April, the company established a collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office and its local strategic partner, Multi Level Group, to drive eVTOL development in the UAE.
EHang is also planning to establish its regional headquarters in Abu Dhabi, aiming to foster business activities with local partners across various sectors, including manufacturing, flight operations, research and development, and maintenance and repair facilities.
The Abu Dhabi office will provide EHang with comprehensive support, including data and information related to establishing and operating a manufacturing and industrial services business, as well as facilitating connections with the Abu Dhabi ecosystem and international trade opportunities.
Badr Al-Olama, director-general of the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, emphasised the significance of collaboration with EHang and other air mobility leaders, stating, "The collaboration with Multi Level Group, and air mobility leaders such as EHang, will play a key role in driving Abu Dhabi's efforts in promoting eVTOLs to transform the way people and goods are transported and in advancing the future of mobility globally."
The successful demo flight of the EH216-S left a lasting impression on Mohamed Al Dhaheri, a board member of MLG, who described the seamless integration of technology and aviation as a significant leap forward for the nation.
