DJI has entered China’s competitive robot vacuum market with the launch of its Romo series, a cleaning robot equipped with drone-level obstacle avoidance technology.

The Romo cleaner uses binocular fish-eye vision sensors and three wide-angle lidars to detect and avoid thin objects like playing cards and cables thicker than 2mm.

The robot combines vacuuming and mopping functions, with a 164ml water tank that adjusts water volume and adds more when encountering heavy dirt. The mop lifts automatically when it detects a carpet.

The Romo series includes three models. The top-tier Romo P features a transparent shell, while the entry-level Romo S has a white cover.

The cleaner has a battery life of three hours, can clean up to 178 square metres, and fully recharges in 2.5 hours. It operates in temperatures between 0°C and 40°C.

Users can control the device remotely via smartphone, using it like a security camera and communicating with people at home.

The Romo S is priced at 4,699 yuan (USD 647), but with a 15% government subsidy and a 300 yuan (USD 42) discount from DJI, the final price drops to 3,739 yuan (USD 514).

Since its launch on Wednesday night, over 4,300 units have been sold on Tmall and JD.com. Sales figures from DJI’s website and Douyin store have not been disclosed.

DJI joins a market led by Chinese brands Roborock, Ecovacs Robotics, Xiaomi, and Dreame, along with US-based iRobot. Roborock held a 16% global share in 2024, followed by iRobot at 13.7%.

In mainland China, Ecovacs, Roborock, and Narwal were the top three suppliers last year. The market grew 6.7% in 2023, with a 30% year-on-year increase in the fourth quarter, driven by government subsidies.

DJI has been expanding beyond drones. Last week, it launched the Osmo 360, its first 8K panoramic video camera.

Meanwhile, Insta360, a rival camera maker, plans to enter the drone market this month under the brand name Antigravity.
