Microsoft has taken a significant step forward in enhancing the repairability and sustainability of its Surface hardware. As part of this initiative, the company has made available a wide selection of replacement parts for Surface tablets, laptops and all-in-one devices on the Microsoft Store. These parts include screens, kickstands, batteries, keyboards, camera modules and other essential components for various Surface models.

The replacement parts are compatible with the following Surface devices: Surface Pro 8, 9 and X; Surface Laptops 2 to 5, Surface Go 2, Surface Studio and Studio 2+ all-in-one desktops. While some major components may come with a higher price tag (e.g., the Surface Studio 2+ display costs $1,750), they offer a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a new device. Furthermore, users can avoid labor costs and ensure the authenticity of the components by opting for genuine first-party replacements.

According to Microsoft VP Tim McGuiggan, when purchasing a replacement component, customers will receive the required part along with any relevant additional components, such as screws if necessary. Repair tools, however, are sold separately through iFixit. McGuiggan emphasized the importance of following the instructions provided in the applicable Microsoft Service Guide or article for a successful repair.

In addition to replacement parts, Microsoft is also offering first-party Surface SSD upgrades for users who wish to expand their storage capacity. Notably, these upgrades are available for Surface Pro 8, 9, X, various generations of Surface Laptops and Surface Laptop Go. While the drives appear similar, the pricing may differ slightly for the more recent Surface devices in certain capacities.

The variation in pricing could be attributed to subtle differences that are not explicitly mentioned in the listings, such as differing PCI Express configurations or ensuring compatibility with specific support requirements. It is worth noting that some users have reported mixed experiences with third-party M.2 2230 drives, like the Sabrent Rocket, in Surface devices. While some users find them to work flawlessly, others have encountered issues such as instability, overheating and sleep problems. By offering first-party drives, Microsoft aims to minimise such concerns, even though they may have a higher cost per gigabyte and limited storage capacity options compared to third-party alternatives.

Early availability of parts is limited to the United States, Canada and France, with Microsoft promising updates on additional markets in the future. This expansion aligns with the company's efforts to improve repairability and sustainability, which have been driven by pressure from shareholders and the growing global movement advocating for right-to-repair legislation.
