DeepSeek has released a v0.2 preview of Harness, its open source agent application, with official desktop installers for macOS on Apple silicon and for 64 bit Windows. The packages come from the official Harness website and mark the first time the company has offered ready made downloads instead of asking users to build the tool themselves. Version 0.1 of Harness arrived as a developer preview.

The largest addition is a plugin management page. Harness is built around a design in which every capability is a plugin, and installing one no longer requires a command line. A user types the npm package name into the page, then can disable or uninstall plugins while reading each one's description and source in the same place.

A separate Creation mode lets a user describe a plugin inside a conversation, and Harness writes or modifies the code for it. The new plugin takes effect immediately, is saved, and appears in the manager. But the company is planning further, because DeepSeek says it wants an official plugin marketplace and a more stable plugin interface with fewer breaking changes.

DeepSeek says about 60% of Harness users already run third party plugins, a figure it counts among users of its official model API. The company describes Harness as the most popular coding agent among those API users, measured by daily active users and daily sessions. It also stresses that the product remains at an early stage.

The release ships a built in automation tasks plugin that users switch on from the plugin page. The plugin turns repetitive work into scheduled tasks with a run history, adjustable frequency, and editable instructions. A hands on review by the tech outlet ifanr found that scheduled tasks keep running after the application is closed.

That review also reports four experimental features listed on the plugin page, which are agent teams, automatic authorization review, automation tasks, and voice input. Voice input downloads a local speech recognition package of about 1 GB. And the roadmap points to a stronger sandbox, better agent teams, personalized long term memory, browser and GUI automation, remote and mobile use, and session sharing for multiple users.

Version 0.2 also reworks how files, content previews, and code changes are displayed. A user can hand Harness documents, spreadsheets, or PDFs to organise material, analyse data, generate charts, or build slide decks, or ask it to modify a project and run the code. Generated files and each round of code changes are collected in the conversation, a side panel previews files and diffs, and results can be opened in local applications.

Users can also choose how much of the agent's working process is shown on screen. DeepSeek says it will tune future models for performance inside Harness, which suggests the agent and the models are being developed against each other. According to Pandaily, Electron preview builds had been circulating from the company's update server before any announcement, and version 0.2 is the official desktop release rather than a leak.

The company keeps Harness open source and aimed at developers, so the desktop packages widen the audience without changing the underlying runtime. No price is given for the desktop application, and the source does not say which models the installers default to. And the plugin marketplace remains a plan rather than a shipped feature.

  • Official macOS and Windows installers arrive for the first time, alongside a v0.2 preview of the agent application.

  • A plugin management page installs npm packages without a command line, and an experimental mode writes plugins from a conversation.

  • DeepSeek says about 60% of its API users running Harness already use third party plugins.

  • A built in automation tasks plugin runs scheduled work that continues after the application is closed.

  • The roadmap covers a stronger sandbox, long term memory, browser automation, and session sharing for multiple users.
