During a live broadcast on China Central Television on Sunday, the Black Panther II completed a 100-metre sprint in 13.17 seconds at an athletics track in Wuhan, Hubei province. The robot reached a peak speed of 9.7 metres per second during the race.

This performance surpasses the WildCat’s top speed of 8.8 metres per second, as recorded in a 2020 research paper by India’s National Institute of Technology.

Mirror Me co-founder Jin Yongbin said the robot had previously achieved a top speed of 10.9 metres per second in earlier tests. He added that the company plans to apply for a Guinness World Record when the time is right, though the team is currently focused on research and development.

The current Guinness World Record is held by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Its Hound robot completed a 100-metre race in 19.87 seconds in 2023, significantly slower than Black Panther II’s recent performance.

Founded in May 2024, Mirror Me is based in Shanghai and was established by graduates and faculty from Zhejiang University. The university has produced several prominent tech entrepreneurs, including DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng and PDD Holdings founder Colin Huang Zheng.

Mirror Me’s other co-founder, Wang Hongtao, is a professor at Zhejiang University specialising in robotics. Jin, who appeared on the televised broadcast, is a researcher at the Humanoid Robot Innovation Research Institute under Zhejiang University’s Hangzhou Global Scientific and Technological Innovation Centre.

In March, the start-up announced it had secured funding from Shanghai-based Hongrun Construction Group, a company focused on railway and bridge construction. Financial details were not disclosed.

In addition to Black Panther II, Mirror Me has developed robotic arms and hands. The company aims to create a bipedal robot capable of running at 10 metres per second by 2026 and a humanoid personal assistant by 2030.
