China has launched the world’s first full-chain artificial intelligence forecasting model for space weather, named FengYu, during the 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on Saturday.

The FengYu model is the first of its kind to cover the entire chain of space weather systems, including the solar wind, magnetosphere and ionosphere.
Wang Jingsong, Director-General of the National Satellite Meteorological Center under the China Meteorological Administration, said the model features a pluggable architecture composed of large models for different space regions.
The architecture allows for updates and modifications based on future needs.
FengYu breaks through the technological limitations of traditional numerical models and is expected to improve responses to solar storms that affect global satellite communications, navigation and critical infrastructure.
Wang said the model achieves intelligent coupling of multi-region models across different scales and layers for the first time globally.
He added that the model was entirely developed on a domestic AI platform and will support future AI advancements in China.
