Hua Eagle Aviation rolled its first production HE-1A off the final assembly line in Weinan late last month, a large fixed wing drone with a four tonne maximum takeoff weight and a two tonne payload.

The payload ratio is the number the company leads with. Carrying half its own takeoff weight in cargo puts the HE-1A in a class above the multicopters used for delivery trials, and the aircraft is aimed at intercity trunk and branch line freight rather than the last mile.

But a rollout is not a certificate. The HE-1A still needs type certification, the company is targeting that by the end of 2027, and the Civil Aviation Administration of China's northwest regional administration only accepted the type certificate application earlier this year.

The airframe builds on the HE-1 technology demonstrator, which first flew in 2024, so the design has been in the air for two years while the production version was tooled up. That gap is normal in aerospace, and it also means the flight test record belongs to the demonstrator rather than to the aircraft now leaving the line.

The Weinan base covers about 50,000 square metres and runs three production lines, which the company says gives capacity for more than 100 aircraft a year. That is a statement about ambition more than demand, since no order book has been disclosed, and capacity without orders is the standing question hanging over every new Chinese freighter programme.

And the bench is the reason the programme is being taken seriously. Founded in 2022, the company says its engineering team includes people who worked on the Y-20 military transport and the C919 airliner, which is the credential that carries the most weight in Chinese aerospace.

And there is a pipeline behind it. The HE-2 is a five tonne class cargo drone with a two to two and a half tonne payload and a rear ramp for airdrops, planned to fly in 2027, while the HE550 is a hybrid electric compound wing eVTOL in the two tonne class designed to lift at least 500 kg.

So the timetable to watch is tight. The production aircraft is due to be shown at the Zhuhai airshow next month with a first flight planned before the end of the year, and certification a year after that, which leaves little room for the flight test campaign to slip.

So the context is China's low altitude economy push, which is aimed at routes where small multicopters lack the range and payload and conventional freighters cost too much, such as feeder links between regional logistics hubs and remote areas. Large uncrewed freighters are the bet that those routes can be served at a price that makes them worth flying.

What is missing is any commercial detail. No launch customer has been named, no price per aircraft or per tonne kilometre has been published, and no route has been announced, which means the payload figure is doing all the persuading for now. Until a customer signs, the economics of the aircraft are a paper calculation, however sound the airframe is.

  • Hua Eagle Aviation rolled out its first production HE-1A in Weinan late last month

  • The drone has a four tonne maximum takeoff weight and carries two tonnes of cargo

  • Type certification is targeted for the end of 2027 and the application was accepted earlier this year

  • The Weinan plant has three lines and capacity for more than 100 aircraft a year

  • The HE-2 and the hybrid electric HE550 are in development for 2027 and beyond
