China launched a national initiative to give every artificial intelligence-driven, bipedal humanoid robot manufactured in the country a unique digital identity. The programme, known as the Humanoid Full Lifecycle Management Service Platform, seeks to promote growth, establish industry standards, and strengthen regulation.

The system tracks robots throughout their entire lifecycle, which spans from production to recycling. The Humanoid Robotics and Embodied Intelligence Standardization committee under China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology leads the programme.

Authorities designed the tracking system to monitor for risks and ensure products are traceable within the fast-developing industry. China Electronics Standardization Institute Deputy Head Yu Xiuming stated the system addresses core issues related to safety, oversight, and governance.

The lifecycle management guidelines apply to all stakeholders, including manufacturers, service providers, sellers, users, and recycle facilities. The initiative already applies to over 100 Chinese manufacturers, with more than 28,000 robots across 200 models assigned an identification code.

Each digital identity consists of four distinct parts to properly categorise and distinguish the machinery. The code features a two-digit national code for tracking cross-border shipments, and a four-digit manufacturer code to identify the Chinese firm.

The remaining portion of the identification code contains a six-digit product model code to identify the robot type, and a 17-digit serial code to distinguish individual units. This structure assists policymakers in promoting industrial coordination.

The initiative comes amid massive sector growth, with the global humanoid robot market expanding 508% last year. Global shipments reached around 18,000 units last year, with Chinese vendors taking a leading position.

Chinese manufacturing capabilities were highlighted at the second annual Beijing E-Town Humanoid Robot Half-Marathon held in Beijing. A humanoid robot finished the race faster than any human has ever run the same distance in history.

The winning robot finished the race in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This time was about six minutes faster than the world record set by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo.

Smartphone and gadget maker Honor, a spin-off from tech giant Huawei, developed the winning humanoid robot, which is named Lightning. Lightning finished nearly two hours ahead of the 2025 robot champion, Tiangong.

Tiangong completed the 2025 race in two hours and 40 minutes. The speed difference highlights the rapid advances the Chinese robotics industry has made in a single year.

  • China launched the Humanoid Full Lifecycle Management Service Platform to assign a unique digital identification to every bipedal robot.

  • The tracking code consists of a national code, a manufacturer code, a product model code, and a unique 17-digit serial number.

  • More than 28,000 robots across 200 models have already received their digital identities under the new initiative.
