The plant has commenced operations, marking a historic moment as the first Chinese automaker to produce passenger cars in Europe. The inaugural joint model, the Ebro S700 sport utility vehicle, has successfully rolled off the production line, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

However, Chery's plans to kickstart the production of its Omoda electric vehicle range at the Barcelona facility have faced a delay. The ongoing trade tensions between China and Europe have pushed back the production timeline to the fourth quarter of 2025, according to a report by Reuters on Nov. 14.

Chery, known for its longstanding partnership with Jaguar Land Rover in China, is not only venturing into Europe but also exploring opportunities in the UK. The automaker has been selling its Omoda 5 SUVs in the UK since August, as highlighted by the BBC on Sept. 8. This move signifies Chery's strategic expansion into new markets and its commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.

In a similar vein, China's leading electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD, announced plans in December to establish its first regional plant in Hungary.
