The number of worldwide desktop and mobile visits to the ChatGPT website dropped by 3.2% to 1.43 billion in August, following similar drops in the previous two months. The average time spent on the website also decreased from 8.7 minutes in March to 7 minutes in August. However, there was a slight increase in the number of unique visitors in August, reaching 180.5 million users.

The decline in traffic may be attributed to the start of the school year, as some schools have begun incorporating ChatGPT into their curriculum. The percentage of younger users on the website dropped over the summer but has started to bounce back as students seek homework help. David F. Carr of Similarweb, who tracks ChatGPT and its competitors, noted this trend.

ChatGPT gained significant popularity after its launch in November and reached 100 million monthly active users in January. It became one of the fastest-growing consumer applications and is now among the top 30 websites globally. Despite the decline in website traffic, ChatGPT faces competition from other chatbots like Google's Bard and Microsoft's chatbot on Bing.

OpenAI also released the ChatGPT app on iOS in May, which could have contributed to the decrease in website traffic. While the basic usage of ChatGPT is free, a premium subscription is available for $20 per month. OpenAI generates revenue by selling access to its AI models to developers and enterprises, as well as through its partnership with Microsoft, which invested over $10 billion in the company.

The decline in ChatGPT's website traffic for the third consecutive month raises questions about its future growth and user engagement. However, the increase in unique visitors and the potential impact of the new school year may indicate a possible turnaround in the coming months.
