Changzhou Builds Nation's First Green AI Token Factory

The Chinese city of Changzhou is constructing what it terms the nation's inaugural city level "green token factory". This development occurs as local governments intensify efforts to meet Beijing's directive. The directive mandates powering substantial artificial intelligence computing demands with clean energy sources.

The Changzhou project is slated to operate solely on green energy. Officials project an annual output of 60 trillion tokens upon its completion. This information was conveyed by the municipal government in a statement released during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, according to the South China Morning Post.

But specific completion dates for this initiative were not provided by the authorities in the eastern Jiangsu province city. The facility is designed to connect directly with renewable energy plants. This arrangement functions under a national policy. This policy permits green power to bypass conventional public grids.

The design principles focus on optimising power usage. Engineers anticipate a 62.5 per cent increase in token output, using identical computing power resources. This arrangement significantly enhances token supply efficiency. Economic viability is also a key consideration for the project.

An agreement formalising this undertaking was signed by seven distinct parties. These included Alibaba Cloud and Wangsu Science and Technology. Wangsu provides information infrastructure platform services. Alibaba Cloud is the cloud computing division of Alibaba Group Holding. Alibaba Group Holding retains ownership of the South China Morning Post.

And the fundamental unit for measuring and billing artificial intelligence services is the token. The "token factory" concept gained prominence recently. Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang popularised this idea. He described it as a new generation of AI data centres. These centres are specifically engineered to maximise token output. Efficiency in computing power and energy usage remains paramount for such facilities.

China has observed a rapid proliferation of token factory projects. This surge is directly attributable to the considerable increase in token usage across the country. The AI boom has generated unprecedented demand for such computational units.

National Bureau of Statistics data reveals a significant increase in China's daily AI token consumption. This consumption rose over 1000 fold in a period spanning just over two years. Daily figures increased from approximately 100 billion tokens to 100 trillion tokens. This information was released in March.

However, other cities are also progressing with similar initiatives. The Beijing Yihao project, identified as the capital city's initial token factory, reached completion recently. It achieved a daily production capacity exceeding 1.4 trillion tokens, according to the municipal government. Its long term objective is to achieve a daily output of 10 trillion tokens.

Wenzhou, located in the eastern Zhejiang province, also announced a development. The city launched its Southeast Token Operation Centre. This new facility harnesses the coastal city's established energy system. This system incorporates resources from nuclear, wind, and water sources.
