These talks specifically concern the integration of an estimated five to six gigawatts of new compute power. A person familiar with these arrangements provided details, requesting anonymity due to the sensitive commercial nature of the information. This development, as reported by the South China Morning Post, signifies a substantial commitment within the regional technology sector.

Such an extensive scale of expansion indicates a formidable financial undertaking for the organisation. Research published by Soochow Securities suggests that the initial investment required for a single gigawatt artificial intelligence data centre typically approaches 160 billion yuan. This figure is approximately equivalent to 23.8 billion USD. And based on these metrics, ByteDance's projected facility, intended to provide between five and six gigawatts, could necessitate an overall investment estimated to range from 800 billion to 960 billion yuan.

The proposed large-scale artificial intelligence data centre cluster is slated for development within Ulanqab's Jining district. This particular geographical area has previously demonstrated its attractiveness for significant computing facility investments from other major technology entities. Noteworthy Chinese technology firms, including Huawei Technologies and Kuaishou, known for its short video and artificial intelligence development, already maintain substantial operational presences there.

Further underscoring the district's established technological appeal, the e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding, alongside the American technology corporation Apple, has also channelled investments into computing infrastructure within Ulanqab's Jining district. ByteDance has set a specific target for the completion and subsequent operational readiness of its new facilities. Delivery is anticipated by early 2028, according to the source providing the information.

This focused initiative to expand data centre capacity coincides with separate financial reports concerning ByteDance. The company has reportedly secured a substantial loan package amounting to 29.6 billion USD from a syndicate of banks. But this particular financing arrangement is understood to represent the second largest USD denominated loan recorded across Asia in the current year, indicating its scale within the financial landscape.
