ByteDance Introduces AI Video App Jimeng AI, Competing with OpenAI's Sora
ByteDance introduces Jimeng AI, an AI video app, joining the competitive market. Chinese tech firms rapidly develop text-to-video tools following OpenAI's Sora. Jimeng AI by ByteDance's Faceu Technology now available on Apple App Store for Chinese users.
This move places ByteDance among a wave of Chinese technology companies venturing into this burgeoning market, which has also caught the attention of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
Following OpenAI's unveiling of the text-to-video model Sora earlier this year, which is currently not publicly available, Chinese firms have swiftly developed similar tools, with many making their models accessible to users. ByteDance's Jimeng AI, developed by its subsidiary Faceu Technology, is now accessible on the Apple App Store for Chinese users, having been released on Android at the end of July.
The introduction of Jimeng AI by ByteDance, the parent company of popular short video app TikTok, comes in the wake of a series of similar model launches in China. Kuaishou, a major video app in China, made its Kling AI text-to-video model available globally last month, with the beta version open for registration worldwide with just an email address.
In addition to ByteDance and Kuaishou, other players in the Chinese AI market have also made strides in this space. Zhipu AI unveiled its video-generating model Ying last month, while shortly after, startup Shengshu launched its Vidu app.
Operated under ByteDance's Jianying business, Faceu Technology is renowned for its video editing app CapCut. Jimeng AI offers subscription plans priced at 69 yuan per month, 79 yuan for a single month, or 659 yuan annually. Each subscription tier enables users to create approximately 2,050 images or 168 AI-generated videos per month.
