BMW Surpasses Tesla in European Electric Vehicle Sales for the First Time
BMW has surpassed Tesla in European BEV sales for the first time. Traditional automakers such as BMW and Volvo are gaining traction in the EV industry. The uncertainty surrounding EV subsidies, as well as Tesla CEO Elon Musk's influence, has an impact on market dynamics.
In July, the German automaker sold 14,869 BEVs, edging Tesla by approximately 300 vehicles.
This change underscores the market success of conventional automakers, which is a departure from their previous position as the market's second-largest player, following dedicated electric-vehicle manufacturers. Government policies and brand loyalty are the reasons for this transformation. Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics, observed that consumer adoption has been impeded by the low residual value of EVs, as well as uncertainties regarding EV incentives and future prospects.
BMW and Volvo are making progress as a result of the ambiguity surrounding EV subsidies, despite Tesla's status as the world's most valuable automaker. Furthermore, reports indicate that Tesla's public image has been adversely affected by CEO Elon Musk's controversial image.
BMW's sales increased by 35% in comparison to the previous year, while Tesla's registrations decreased by 16%. In July, the number of electric vehicles registered decreased by 6% from July 2023, with approximately 139,300 electric vehicles being registered in the overall electric vehicle market. Additionally, the market proportion of electric vehicles (EVs) declined from 14.6% to 13.5% year over year.
