Bill Gates Holds AMA on Reddit, Reveals Views on AI, Plant-Based Meats & Current Phone
Bill Gates took some time off his schedule on Wednesday to return to Reddit for another Ask Me Anything (AMA), weighing in on topics like artificial intelligence (AI), plant-based meats and his favourite shows and movies, among others.
During the session, Gates said AI shows a lot of promise in shifting the technology of the near future. "AI is the big one," he said in response to a question about what technology is seeing a shift today. "I don't think Web3 was that big or that metaverse stuff alone was revolutionary but AI is quite revolutionary."
The billionaire philanthropist also said he's impressed at the rate AI is improving, particularly with OpenAI's ChatGPT, a chatbot that can provide complex and human-like responses. He believes AI could make a huge impact in different fields.
"Thinking of it in the Gates Foundation context we want to have tutors that help kids learn math and stay interested. We want medical help for people in Africa who can't access a Doctor. I still work with Microsoft some so I am following this very closely," he said.
When asked about his take on plant-based diets as a means of reducing climate impact, Gates said, "for people who want to go vegan, that is great, but I don't think most people will do that."
"There are companies making 'beef' in new ways and people working to still use cows but reduce the methane emissions," he added. "I have backed a number of innovators in this space including Beyond and Impossible and Memphis."
"I think eventually these products will be very good even though their share is small today."
As for his daily driver, Gates said he's using a Samsung Galaxy Fold 4, which was given to him by Samsung Chairman Jay Y. Lee. Previously, he used a Galaxy Z Fold 3. "Of course I use Outlook and a lot of Microsoft software on it. The screen size means I don't use a tablet but just the phone and my portable PC - a Windows machine," he said.
Gates also shared his favourite movies and shows from the past year. He said he found the second season of White Lotus "quite good", and congratulated star Jennifer Coolidge on her Golden Globe win. He also liked Avatar: The Way of Water. However, he said his favourite entertainment experience last year was a Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle event.
The session, which lasted more than an hour, marked the Microsoft cofounder's 11th Reddit AMA, with his last one in March 2021.
