The company claims that Ernie 4.0's capabilities are on par with OpenAI's GPT-4 model, which is known for its advanced language processing abilities.

Baidu CEO Robin Li introduced Ernie 4.0 at an event in Beijing, highlighting its memory capabilities and demonstrating its ability to write a martial arts novel in real-time. The AI model was also shown creating advertising posters and videos.

Baidu, known for its ownership of China's largest internet search engine, is at the forefront of AI models in China. The introduction of OpenAI's ChatGPT last year sparked a global craze over AI technology. In March, Baidu launched a chatbot called ErnieBot, powered by the Ernie AI model. However, investors were disappointed as they were only shown pre-recorded demonstrations at the time.

In August, Baidu received government approval, along with several other firms, to release AI products to the public. This move reflects China's growing focus on AI development and its desire to compete globally in the field. Currently, China has at least 130 large language models (LLMs), representing 40% of the global total, second only to the United States' 50%.
