Apple is reportedly gearing up to produce M4 computer processors with advanced AI processing capabilities, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg News. The tech giant is said to be planning to update its entire Mac lineup with these new chips, including iMacs, MacBook Pros, and Mac minis.
The updated computers are expected to be released later this year and early next year. Among the new models are a low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro and high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. The industry is banking on a new generation of laptops and desktops equipped with more powerful chips capable of handling AI tasks without relying on cloud-based processing. Intel and Qualcomm are among the companies preparing similar chips, while Nvidia is reportedly planning to enter the PC market with its own AI chip by 2025.
Apple intends to showcase the AI processing capabilities of the M4 chips and highlight their integration with the upcoming version of macOS, as per the Bloomberg report.
This news comes ahead of Apple's annual developers conference in June, where the tech giant is expected to make announcements regarding new AI partnerships and significant changes to its iOS operating system. The move to update its Mac lineup with AI-focused chips could be a strategic step for Apple to regain momentum in the market.
In Apple's most recent fiscal year, Mac sales saw a decline of 27%. However, the company unveiled the current-generation M3 chips and new MacBook Pro and iMac models in October, which were well-received by consumers.
