Apple is exploring the use of artificial intelligence technology from Anthropic or OpenAI to power a new version of Siri, Bloomberg News reported.

The move marks a potential shift away from Apple’s in-house AI models. Discussions with both companies have included the possibility of training large language models (LLMs) that could run on Apple’s cloud infrastructure for testing.
The investigation into third-party AI models is still in its early stages, and Apple has not made a final decision.
Shares of Apple closed 2% higher on Monday following the report.
In March, Apple announced that AI improvements to Siri would be delayed until 2026, without providing a reason.

The company has since restructured its executive team to refocus its AI efforts. Mike Rockwell now leads Siri development after CEO Tim Cook reportedly lost confidence in AI head John Giannandrea’s ability to deliver on product goals.
At its Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, Apple highlighted smaller updates aimed at improving daily user experience, such as live translations for phone calls.
Apple software chief Craig Federighi said the company is opening its foundational AI model to third-party developers. Apple will also offer both its own and OpenAI’s code completion tools in its developer software.
