Apple Collaborates with Google to Enhance AI Models for Siri

Apple has partnered with OpenAI to incorporate its AI model into Siri. Apple's engineers used their own software framework along with Google's TPUs for AI model development. Google's TPUs are specifically designed for AI applications and training models.

The deal involves incorporating OpenAI's advanced artificial intelligence (AI) model into Apple's voice assistant, Siri. However, buried within a technical document released by Apple after the event, it becomes evident that Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has also played a significant role in Apple's AI endeavors.

To develop the foundation of Apple's AI models, the company's engineers utilised their own framework software in conjunction with a range of hardware. Notably, Apple employed its own on-premise graphics processing units (GPUs) and relied on Google's cloud-based tensor processing units (TPUs). Google has been refining TPUs for a decade and has publicly discussed two versions of its fifth-generation chips, specifically designed for AI training. The performance version of these chips offers competitive performance comparable to Nvidia H100 AI chips.

During its annual developer conference, Google announced plans to launch a sixth-generation of TPUs later this year. These processors are specifically designed to optimise AI applications and train models, and Google has built a comprehensive cloud computing hardware and software platform around them.

Both Apple and Google have refrained from commenting on the extent to which Apple relied on Google's chips and software, as opposed to hardware from other AI vendors such as Nvidia. However, it is worth noting that utilising Google's chips typically requires clients to purchase access to them through Google's cloud division, similar to how customers buy computing time from Amazon.com's AWS or Microsoft's Azure.
