Apple's China Smartphone Shipments Drop 9% in First Quarter

Apple's smartphone shipments in China fell 9% year-on-year in the first quarter, making it the only major manufacturer to report a decline, according to research firm IDC.
The U.S. tech giant shipped 9.8 million iPhones during the quarter, down from the previous year, and saw its market share shrink to 13.7% from 17.4% in the previous quarter.
This marks Apple's seventh consecutive quarter of declining shipments in China.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi, the market leader, recorded a 40% surge in shipments, reaching 13.3 million units. Overall, the Chinese smartphone market grew 3.3% in the same period.
IDC analyst Will Wong attributed Apple's decline to its premium pricing, which limited its ability to benefit from new government subsidies introduced in January.
The subsidies refund consumers 15% on smartphones and other electronics priced under 6,000 yuan (USD 820), a threshold that excludes most Apple devices.
