Anthropic is disabling its most advanced artificial intelligence models for all users. The company received an export control directive from the U.S. government to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all foreign nationals.

The government cited national security concerns regarding the directive. Anthropic stated the government believes a method exists to bypass safeguards that would prevent Fable 5 from identifying software vulnerabilities.
This directive marks a significant escalation in U.S. efforts to limit foreign access to AI capabilities. Previous export controls focused on the hardware and tools that power AI, rather than restricting access to the technology itself.
Anthropic said the government provided only verbal evidence of a potential narrow, non-universal jailbreak. The company disagreed that a narrow potential issue should cause the recall of a model deployed to hundreds of millions of users.
The company is working to restore access to the models, stating it believes the situation stems from a misunderstanding. Access to other models provided by the company remains unaffected.
Amazon Web Services said Anthropic requested the revocation of access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users in all regions. A U.S. official confirmed the Department of Commerce issued the directive to suspend access for foreign nationals.
