AMD Brings 3D V-Cache Tech to Laptops With New Ryzen 7000 Series Processor
Updated: Dec 18, 2023
AMD is giving power-hungry laptop users a tempting reason to upgrade.
The semiconductor giant announced on Thursday 27, July that it would be expanding the Ryzen 7000 series with a new X3D mobile gaming processor, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D.
The new chip leverages AMD's Zen 4 architecture and advanced 3D V-Cache tech to deliver what's touted as desktop-class gaming performance for on-the-go gamers.
AMD touts that it's the first time that its 3D V-Cache tech is coming to mobile processors. Gamers have long speculated as to when the technology, which was previously exclusive to desktop processors, would arrive on mobile. Now, those talks can finally be put to rest.
For those unfamiliar, 3D V-Cache is AMD's packaging tech that stacks layers of cache on top of the processor, instead of laying them next to it, as was tradition before. The result of which is essentially improved gaming performance, such as more stable frame rate numbers, for example.
The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D features 16 cores and 32 threads with a maximum clock speed of 5.4Ghz, along with 144MB of cache. AMD claims it's now the world's fastest mobile gaming processor, being up to 15% faster than the Ryzen 7945HX on average.
AMD also announced it's teaming up with Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) in debuting the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D on a consumer product. As part of that partnership, the ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D would be among the first laptops that would be powered by the processor. The laptop is set to hit the market on 22nd August 2023.
While the jury is still out how the 3D V-Cache tech performs on laptops, the launch of the new processor does give AMD an edge over its competitors like Intel. If the launch is successful, it's very likely for the packaging tech to find its way into other products, such as eight-core or six-core processors.
