The e-commerce behemoth's capital outlays, primarily directed towards developing cloud and generative AI infrastructure, are anticipated to have surged by 43% in the second quarter to US$16.41 billion, as per LSEG data. This marks a substantial US$1.5 billion upsurge from the previous quarter.

This substantial investment is projected to exert pressure on Amazon's profit margins, overshadowing the advantages of cost reductions and enhancements in the retail unit's supply chain efficiency.

While Amazon Web Services (AWS) has traditionally held a dominant position in the cloud-computing sector, it has encountered stiff competition from Microsoft in recent times following the latter's introduction of AI-driven services to its Azure cloud division.

In response, Amazon has formed agreements with firms such as Anthropic and provided free credits to startups to cover the costs of implementing key AI models, with the goal of increasing the market share of its AI platform, Bedrock. In addition, the AWS unit's new leader was chosen in May.

Microsoft and Google's parent company, Alphabet, have also reaffirmed their commitment to sustained investing, despite the extended timescale for AI returns, which has dampened some investors' enthusiasm. This development has had an influence on the values of Big Tech stocks, which have risen this year due to the promise of artificial intelligence.

Ben Barringer, an analyst at Quilter Cheviot, stated, "Amazon's capex spend will certainly be scrutinised closely. It has been slow on the adoption of AI and is skewed towards smaller companies which have struggled in the high interest-rate environment. We would expect AWS to start speeding things up in its AI development going forward."

Amazon's stock has risen by nearly 23% this year. However, the stock has fallen more than 6% since setting a record on July 8, as part of a larger market slide led by US megacaps.
