Amazon.com is developing augmented reality, AR, glasses for consumers, according to The Information, which reported on Wednesday. This development would position the company in direct competition with Facebook owner Meta Platforms.

The consumer glasses are internally codenamed "Jayhawk," the report stated. They will incorporate microphones, speakers, a camera, and a full-colour display in one eye.
Amazon aims to release this product to consumers in late 2026 or early 2027. This project signifies Amazon’s entry into the consumer AR-glasses market.
The company has also been working on specialised eyewear for delivery drivers, according to a Reuters exclusive report last year. These delivery eyeglasses are designed to provide turn-by-turn navigation on a small screen along routes and at each stop.
Both the consumer and delivery models utilise the same underlying display technology. The consumer version will feature a full-colour display and a sleeker, less bulky design compared to the delivery model.
The delivery-worker glasses could debut as early as the second quarter of 2026. An initial production plan of about 100,000 units has been outlined for this model.
Amazon’s consumer AR glasses would directly compete with Meta Platforms. Meta is anticipated to unveil a new version of its AR glasses at its Connect conference next week.

Earlier this year, Meta partnered with EssilorLuxottica’s Oakley on AI-powered smart glasses. This followed the success of its Ray-Ban Meta line, which has sold in the millions since its 2023 launch, according to media reports.
