Pixel 7 Prototype Pops Up on eBay Ahead of Official Release

Updated: Jun 2, 2022

The Google Pixel 7 is already on sale just a few days after it was first unveiled – or rather, an unofficial version of it that is. The Verge spotted an eBay listing selling what looks to be a working prototype of Google’s forthcoming flagship.

The listing is the first time the device has been spotted in the wild, with it not due out until later in the fall season. And going by the pictures from the listing, it does match up with what Google has shown at its I/O developer conference. The alleged prototype sports the same distinctive design features from the official renders, such as the new aluminium bar with cutouts for the cameras and the deep black colourway option.

The seller took photos of the device from almost every angle, but there’s not anything particularly new that hasn’t been spotted from the renders before. Perhaps the only new tidbit the listing reveals is that the Pixel 7 will include a 128GB option, with one photo showing the phone turned on and having 128GB of storage. One screenshot, meanwhile, says the phone’s model is GVU6C. There’s also a chance the seller may have gotten their hands on a Pixel 7 Pro, with one photo seemingly showing the reflection of Pixel 7 Pro’s camera bar on the back of the Pixel 7 prototype.

According to The Verge, the seller says they obtained the prototype from a wholesaler without knowing what it was. They only realised it was the Pixel 7 upon doing some research and comparing it with photos online.

The listing has since been closed, which had a starting bid of US$450. The seller said they also had a Pixel 7 Pro, but sold it already.

Google seems to have a pretty bad track record of keeping its future releases a secret. Multiple prototypes of its yet-to-be-announced devices have been found in some of the most unlikely places by the public. The most recent of which is the supposed prototype of the Pixel Watch, which was found at a restaurant ahead of its official reveal.

Despite this, it does get people buzzing and helps create a bit of excitement months before release. The Pixel 7 is not due out until later this year, so right now these photos from the eBay listing offer the best in-hand look at the device yet.
