Alibaba Group is preparing to release Qwen 3, an upgraded version of its flagship artificial intelligence model, as soon as April, according to a Bloomberg News report.

The exact release date may still shift, but the launch is expected later this month.
The move comes amid intensifying competition in the AI sector, especially following the rapid rise of Chinese AI firm DeepSeek earlier this year.
DeepSeek gained global attention with a new model it claimed was more cost-effective to develop than Western alternatives.
In response, Alibaba released Qwen 2.5-Max in late January, just days after DeepSeek’s announcement.
Alibaba claimed Qwen 2.5-Max outperformed DeepSeek’s highly praised V3 model.
The release of Qwen 2.5-Max on the first day of the Lunar New Year, a major holiday in China, underscored the urgency Alibaba felt to respond to DeepSeek’s momentum.
DeepSeek is also expected to launch a successor to its R1 model before May.
Both the R1 and V3 models have received strong recognition in Silicon Valley.
