Chinese e-commerce and AI company Alibaba Group Holding has established a high-level technology committee led by CEO Eddie Wu Yongming. This move is part of a broader restructuring aimed at sharpening its focus on artificial intelligence as competition intensifies.

The Hangzhou-based organisation formed the Alibaba Group Technology Committee to accelerate AI development, according to an internal letter from Wu to staff. This committee brings together several senior executives.

Zhou Jingren, former chief technology officer of Alibaba Cloud, will serve as the committee's chief AI architect. Group CTO Wu Zeming will concentrate on the company’s business technology and AI inference platforms.

Previously, Wu Zeming led Alibaba's food delivery operations. Li Feifei has been appointed to lead Alibaba Cloud’s technology and AI infrastructure, while also taking on the role of cloud CTO, effective Wednesday.

Alibaba has also upgraded its Tongyi Laboratory, developer of its Qwen series of large language models, into a dedicated Tongyi Large Model Business Unit. Zhou will lead this new unit, formalising the lab’s central role in model development.

Zhou has worked at Alibaba for more than a decade and has led the Tongyi lab and development of its Qwen AI models. The restructuring follows the recent creation of the Alibaba Token Hub (ATH) Business Group.

ATH consolidates the company’s core AI teams and products, including Tongyi, under a single umbrella. Also led by Wu, ATH sits alongside Alibaba Cloud and the group’s e-commerce divisions in the corporate structure.

The unit is built around the concept of tokens, which are the basic units processed and generated by large language models. Tokens are the basic units processed and generated by large language models when handling text, images, and code.

Alibaba’s latest moves reflect China’s rapidly evolving AI sector. Domestic rivals are racing to roll out foundation models and agent-based tools amidst growing momentum around technologies such as OpenClaw.
