Artificial intelligence is more likely to disrupt jobs traditionally held by women than those held by men, according to a new report from the United Nations' International Labour Organization.

Person typing on a laptop with "AI CHAT" text on screen, large monitor in background displays "AI GENERATIVE" in blue, tech-focused setting.

The report, released Tuesday, found that 9.6% of female-dominated jobs are expected to be transformed by AI, compared with 3.5% of male-dominated roles. The disparity is most pronounced in high-income countries.

Clerical and administrative positions, such as secretarial work, are among the most vulnerable as AI increasingly automates routine tasks. These roles are predominantly held by women.

The report noted that while AI may not eliminate entire occupations, it has the potential to significantly alter the tasks involved.

Jobs in media, software, and finance are also expected to undergo major changes as generative AI continues to evolve.

The report urged governments, employers, and workers' organisations to consider how AI can be used to improve productivity and job quality, rather than simply replace human labour.

  • AI is set to transform 9.6% of female-dominated jobs vs. 3.5% of male-dominated ones

  • Clerical and administrative roles are most at risk

  • Human involvement will still be needed in many tasks
