Calbee's strategic shift entails investing in startups, with a special emphasis on food technology businesses in the United States, in order to improve the development of healthier snacks, expedite manufacturing processes, and design new business methods.
A Calbee spokeswoman voiced confidence in AI's transformative potential for their operations and the food sector as a whole, predicting considerable improvements in efficiency and quality.
Anis Uzzaman, CEO of Pegasus Tech Ventures, emphasised the research of AI applications to enhance potato chip manufacturing and potentially create innovative AI-generated chip designs. Calbee intends to speed its research and development initiatives by employing AI simulations for product testing and consumer preferences, resulting in the faster release of new items to the market.
Furthermore, AI will play a critical role in analysing consumer data, such as preferences, habits, and cultural nuances, allowing Calbee to tailor the characteristics of their potato chips, such as thickness, crispiness, saltiness, and spice levels, to effectively cater to diverse demographics and market segments.
In addition to AI integration, Calbee is expanding its investment portfolio to include alternative food technologies such as plant-based and insect-based food items, in line with a growing trend in certain Asian countries.
