Individuals seeking romantic connections are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence. Many users now employ chatbots to assist with various aspects of their dating lives, from crafting initial messages to understanding replies. This marks a notable shift in modern courtship practices.

Marie Lansley, 36, recently relocated for a new job in a new city and actively seeks a partner. She finds starting conversations on dating applications challenging. Lansley consults AI chatbots for assistance in composing opening remarks. While open to AI facilitating her search for a life partner, she expresses reservation. AI may make dating more efficient, but human chemistry remains "analog," she states.

AI adopters utilise the technology for romance in several capacities, including matchmaking and building dating profiles. The most frequent application involves enlisting chatbots to draft outgoing messages and interpret incoming communications. OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, Elon Musk's Grok, and Google's Gemini are among the platforms used. And dating applications are incorporating this trend, with chatbot developers demonstrating customised advice on platforms like TikTok.

Dating coach Carey Gaynes observed daters of all ages using this technology. She likens AI assistance to Cyrano de Bergerac. Gaynes notes users are "using a voice that is not yours" and expresses concern about overreliance. Lansley also found chatbots' apparent emotional intelligence surprising, noting bot questions during a Known application onboarding call delved "one or two levels deeper" than conventional dating apps.

Mason Naung, a 25 year old student, acknowledges chatbots' usefulness for "icebreakers" but believes AI written messages beyond initial exchanges signal a "small red flag." Dani Cohen, a 27 year old business owner, prefers an AI generated farewell message to being "ghosted." She believes any method encouraging kind and effective communication is beneficial. But individuals express reservations concerning AI's application to deeply personal matters.

Many AI adopters set specific boundaries; others would never consider using a chatbot. Clara Sullivan, a 22 year old student, would not respond if aware messages were AI written. She believes reliance on AI restricts creative thought. A 2025 Pew Research Center survey, as reported by The Associated Press, indicated that 53 per cent of US adults anticipate AI will diminish creative thinking, and half believe it will negatively affect meaningful relationships.

The integration of AI into the dating industry was likely inevitable. Many dating applications have incorporated AI features for several years. Tinder offers an AI powered feature, Chemistry. Hinge provides AI powered conversation starters and feedback for building profiles. And the founder of Bumble recently announced the platform's intention to discontinue its swipe feature, shifting towards AI driven matchmaking.

This decision from Bumble encountered opposition. Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble CEO and founder, stated this development aims for technology to make "love and connection feel more human, not less." Mohammed Nizami, 23, avoids AI for dating, asserting people inherently seek authentic connection. He views AI as a "filter or barrier" in nascent relationships. Nizami suggests chatbots' sycophantic nature may offer "mental comfort" but not necessarily sound advice.

So, despite widespread reservations, AI is expected to assume an increasing role in modern dating. Jake Clay, a 30 year old content creator, lamented the "outsourcing" of a personal process. He observed fewer friends asking him to interpret messages from potential partners, as they now consult chatbots. Clay described this as a "Catch 22," noting that while he appreciated AI "lifting the load," it "circumvents some of the normal processes in life that I feel like should be a little bit more sacred."

  • AI chatbots are increasingly used for dating, from drafting initial messages to interpreting replies.

  • Users acknowledge AI's efficiency in dating but question its capacity to foster genuine human chemistry.

  • Concerns persist regarding AI's potential to diminish creative thought and the formation of meaningful relationships.

  • Dating applications, including Tinder and Hinge, have integrated AI features, while Bumble plans a shift towards AI driven matchmaking.

  • Many individuals express reservations about AI's role in personal romantic pursuits, with some setting clear boundaries for its use.
