San Francisco-based startup Anthropic has raised the stakes in the race to develop the most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. The company, founded by former leaders at ChatGPT maker OpenAI, has unveiled its latest creation: Claude 3, the third generation of its large language model. Anthropic claims that Claude 3 surpasses its predecessors in terms of sophistication and capabilities.

While OpenAI has a close partnership with Microsoft, Anthropic has aligned itself with Amazon as its primary cloud computing partner. Amazon has committed to investing up to $4 billion in Anthropic, while Google has also made investments in the company. These partnerships have drawn the attention of U.S. antitrust enforcers at the Federal Trade Commission, who have requested further information from the companies.

The new Claude 3 models come in three versions, all of which possess computer vision capabilities. This allows them to analyze images, charts, and graphs. However, unlike Google's Gemini chatbot, which recently faced controversy over its depiction of race and ethnicity, Claude 3 does not generate new images. This decision aims to avoid potential pitfalls and ensure responsible AI usage.

Anthropic claims that its most advanced and expensive model, Claude 3 Opus, outperforms OpenAI's ChatGPT-4 and Google's Gemini Ultra in specific multiple-choice tests used to assess chatbot capabilities.
