A new pilot scheme using artificial intelligence is targeting roadside littering in East Yorkshire.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has partnered with Litter Cam to trial a CCTV camera equipped with AI software on the A164 near the Willerby Roundabout.

The camera records drivers who throw rubbish from their vehicles, using AI to detect number plates and identify the litter being dumped.
The 12-week trial began this week. Offenders caught on camera will be contacted by the council.
If the scheme proves effective, the council plans to expand the initiative by installing more AI cameras in known litter hotspots across the county.
Councillor Lyn Healing, cabinet member for communities and public protection, said modern technology is a key part of the council’s strategy to tackle littering.
She noted that keeping roadsides and streets clean costs the council approximately £4M annually.
Andrew Kemp, chief executive of Litter Cam, said the company is pleased to support the council in addressing the issue.
