AI Camera Deployed to Monitor Driving Offences
AI camera system in Plymouth aims to enhance road safety. Human review process follows AI detection of driving offences. Positive results seen from previous deployments of similar technology in Devon and Cornwall.

This innovative technology captures images of passing vehicles to determine if passengers are wearing seatbelts and if the driver is using a mobile phone while driving. Plymouth City Council clarified that while AI is used to detect offences, human review is conducted on the captured images.
In the event of an offence being detected, the driver will receive either a warning letter or a notice of intended prosecution. Adrian Leisk, head of road safety for Devon and Cornwall Police, emphasised the importance of road safety, citing recent tragic incidents in the region due to seatbelt negligence and mobile phone usage while driving. Leisk stated, "We don’t want to catch people – we just want motorists to stay safe by wearing a seatbelt and not using their phones while driving."
The council reported positive outcomes from previous implementations of the Acusensus technology in Devon and Cornwall. In 2023, when deployed on the A30 and A38, the cameras revealed a phone offence rate of 0.31% and a seat belt offence rate of 0.38%.
