A Coffee Roastery in Finland Unveils Surprising AI-Generated Blend

Kaffa Roastery collaborates with AI consultancy Elev to develop an AI-generated coffee blend. The "AI-conic" blend features four types of beans, surprising experts with its unique combination. Blind taste tests confirm the AI-assisted blend requires no further adjustments.

Helsinki, Finland - Kaffa Roastery, an artisan coffee roastery based in the Finnish capital, has made waves in the coffee industry by introducing a unique blend developed entirely by artificial intelligence (AI). This groundbreaking trial aims to explore how technology can streamline the traditionally manual process of coffee roasting.

Finland, known for its love of coffee, consumes the highest amount per capita in the world, with an average of 12 kilograms annually, according to the International Coffee Organization. It is fitting, then, that Kaffa Roastery chose to launch their "AI-conic" blend in this coffee-loving Nordic nation.

The AI-picked blend features a combination of four different types of beans, with Brazil's velvety Fazenda Pinhal taking the lead. The collaboration between Kaffa Roastery, Finland's third-largest coffee roastery, and local AI consultancy Elev, utilised models similar to ChatGPT and Copilot to create a blend that pushes the boundaries of conventional flavor combinations.

Svante Hampf, the managing director and founder of Kaffa Roastery, explained that they provided the AI with descriptions of their various coffee types and flavors, instructing it to craft an exciting new blend. The result is a well-balanced combination of sweetness and ripe fruit, as described on the coffee package label.

Interestingly, the AI chose to incorporate four different types of coffee beans, deviating from the usual two or three. Hampf admitted to being surprised by this decision, but after conducting blind taste tests, Kaffa's coffee experts agreed that the AI-assisted blend was perfect, requiring no further adjustments.

Antti Merilehto, a spokesperson for Elev, highlighted that "AI-conic" is a tangible example of how AI can bring new perspectives to seasoned professionals and offer coffee lovers unique taste experiences.

Kaffa Roastery sees this trial as the first step in exploring the potential of AI in the coffee industry. Finland, with its strong coffee culture and passion for technology, is the perfect backdrop for this innovative experiment. The successful collaboration between the artisan skills of the roastery and AI-provided data has impressed the team, leaving them excited about the future possibilities AI can bring to the world of coffee.
