Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 480 5G Mobile Platform, the first mobile platform in its 4-series that is equipped with 5G network connectivity.
In a 4 January press release from Qualcomm, Kedar Kondap, the company’s vice president for product management, said that the mobile platform is set to “accelerate 5G commercialization globally to make 5G smartphones more accessible, especially as people worldwide continue to connect remotely.”
The new mobile platform is equipped with specs to deliver high and mid-tier performance with faster phone performance and charging compared to the previous generation. Alongside the 5G-enabled connectivity, the mobile platform has the Qualcomm Kryo 460 CPU, Adreno 619 GPU, and Hexagon 686 Processor at its disposal.
The new mobile platform also takes care of users’ time off work. The support for FHD+ display with 120Hz refresh rate gives users clear and quick graphics rendering, and the Qualcomm aptX audio codec will also be supported.
A product manager from Oppo was quoted in the press release saying that they’re excited to “leverage” the new mobile platform to “scale consumer access to and use of 5G globally.”
The product manager also added that they are hoping to continue their collaboration with Qualcomm to “bring consumers a wider selection of affordable smartphone choices with enhanced mobile experiences.”
Singapore has been steadily converting from 4G to 5G, and with the latter being found to be advantageous to them according to a 2019 report from Kearney, even more Singaporeans will be able to enjoy 5G since Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 480 5G chip will bring 5G capabilities to budget phones and not limit it to just high-end flagships.
The first commercial devices powered by the Snapdragon 480 5G Mobile Platform are expected to be announced in early 2021.
