Sony Unveils Design of PlayStation VR2 Headset

The next-generation virtual reality (VR) headset is being developed exclusively for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and thus takes inspiration from the design language of the console’s family of products. It uses the same clean-looking black and white colourway as the console itself but the overall shape is more akin to the DualSense controller and the Pulse 3D headphones.

Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President for PlayStation Platform Experience, explains via the PlayStation Blog that the idea behind the orb-like look of both the headset and its accompanying Sense controllers is to represent the 360-degree view that players experience when they enter the VR world.

Additionally, the headset will, of course, be worn by players, so there was a conscious effort to make it as ergonomic and as comfortable as possible for a variety of head sizes. This comes in the way of new features such as a lens adjustment dial and a slimmer, more lightweight profile. The headset also includes a new vent design, which is meant to let the air out and prevent the lens from fogging up while players are immersed in their games.

Nishino pointed out that they iterated upon the concept of the first PS VR headset, retaining what worked on this second release based on the feedback they received. Sony previously confirmed that some of the improvements of the VR2 include 4K HDR video output with 90Hz and 120Hz refresh rates, eye-tracking and haptic feedback.

Development kits of the VR2 are said to be already in the hands of game creators. One game that's confirmed to be in development for the new headset is Horizon Call of the Mountain, a first-party VR experience based on Sony's Horizon franchise, which was teased at CES 2022.

Sony, however, has yet to share details regarding the price and release date for the PlayStation VR2.
