Sony 70-200mm f2.8 GM OSS II First Impressions: Fastest Auto-Focus Ever!

Sony has pulled the curtains back on the newest member of its G Master lineup of lenses, the FE 70-200mm f2.8 GM OSS II zoom lens. The company touts that the new lens is the lightest large-aperture telephoto zoom lens out in the market at 1,045 grams, allowing for improved shooting flexibility and freedom.

"The FE 70-200mm f2.8 GM OSS II is lightweight and offers outstanding handling in any shooting situation," said Yasufumi Machitani, General Manager of Sony Asia Pacific’s Digital Imaging Division. "The newest addition to our G Master series will make a perfect telephoto addition to any creator’s kit who is looking to maximise their gear potential for both stills and video."


This new model uses four extreme dynamic linear motors for fast and precise autofocus (AF), with Sony claiming that the AF performance is up to three times faster than the competition and four times faster than its previous model.

When paired with Sony’s flagship Alpha 1, the lens is capable of high-speed continuous shooting at up to 30fps. For video, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II can focus and track fast-moving subjects even while zooming in, which saves the user from having to worry about the focus while shooting. Sony adds that the lens is designed to dramatically reduce focus breathing, focus shift and axis shift when zooming.

It has smoother and softer bokeh, which Sony credits to an f2.8 maximum aperture and a newly developed 11-blade circular aperture unit. The lens also features three separate rings for focus, aperture and zoom, making manual operation easier and more precise. Along with all these, it includes extra-low dispersion, a new Nano AR Coating II to reduce flare and ghosting effects and aspherical glass to reduce suppresses chromatic and spherical aberration, among others.


Sony said the lens can be paired with a 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverter, which will be sold separately, to extend the focal length to 400mm at f5.6. The FE 70-200mm f2.8 GM OSS II will be available in Singapore at selected Sony retail and online outlets starting November 2021.
