Works brilliantly on the plane, no latency when gaming with the Nintendo Switch
Small and compact, much easier to bring along on flights
Before I started using true wireless earbuds, I was firmly in the wired earpiece camp. I still believe that’s the best option for audio quality, but there’s no denying how convenient true wireless earbuds are. The only downside? You can’t use them for plane rides and if you have a Nintendo Switch, there’s no Bluetooth connectivity there either.
I’ve been resorting to carrying around a second wired earpiece just for my Switch, but at least there’s still a wired option for headphones. But what if nobody has to do that anymore? What if you can just carry around one small adapter and use your true wireless earbuds for the plane, your Nintendo Switch and anything else that has a 3.5mm headphone jack? RHA’s Wireless Flight Adapter is a godsend.
With two jacks that can be used together or separately, you’ll be able to use the adapter to connect to either a single stereo channel, or twin mono audio channels. The adapter connects securely to the plug on the plane, and there was never a moment where I felt like it was too loose.
With adapters like these, there’s always the possibility of latency ruining the viewing experience, but I’m happy to say that I didn’t experience any audio lag while playing games on my Switch such as Fire Emblem: Three Houses or Super Smash Brothers Ultimate.
Movies and in-flight entertainment were all smooth as well, and there were no connection drops or stuttering while I was using the adapter, whether it was on the plane or on public transport.
The adapter has 16 hours of continuous playback battery life on a full charge, which makes it suitable for use on long flights. In addition, if you forgot to charge the adapter before a flight, you can use a USB-C cable to charge the adapter while it’s running.
The best part? This adapter is compact and so lightweight, perfect for travelling. Bringing this saves me the 400-or-so grams of a good ANC headphone for this 24g adapter!
This adapter really does fit all my needs. I’ve always preferred earpieces over headphones for a multitude of reasons, and the Sony WF-1000XM3 is now my go-to when I’m travelling, because the ANC tech inside is enough to block out most of the plane noise without me having to bring a pair of big, bulky headphones. Granted, the ANC on headphones would be better, but the size and weight is the trade-off.
Previously, I would never be able to use the Sony earbuds to connect to the in-flight system since there’s no Bluetooth system for connecting to the plane and there’s no wired connectivity either, so I was resigned to only using my phone during flights. With the RHA adapter, I found myself enjoying movies all throughout my flight to Shanghai with my comfortable earbuds.
