Chinese battery giant CATL is making significant strides in its mission to electrify passenger airplanes. During a recent presentation at the World Economic Forum, CATL's founder, Robin Zeng, shared exciting updates on the development of their condensed matter battery. This groundbreaking technology is set to revolutionise the aviation industry by providing a flight range of 2,000 to 3,000 kilometers (1,243-1,864 miles) in the coming years.

CATL recently conducted a successful test flight in collaboration with the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, a state-owned plane manufacturer. The test involved a four-ton civilian airplane powered by CATL's condensed matter battery. The results were promising, paving the way for further advancements in electric aviation.

Zeng revealed that CATL is aiming to launch an eight-ton electric aircraft by 2027, powered by their high energy-dense battery. This aircraft is expected to have a remarkable flight range of up to 3,000 kilometers, making it a game-changer in the industry. With this breakthrough, CATL is positioning itself as a leader in the race to electrify air travel.

The condensed matter battery prototype, showcased by CATL at the Auto Shanghai Show last April, is a semi-solid state product with condensed electrolytes. It boasts an impressive energy density of 500 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg).
