Apple Rolls Out macOS Sonoma, Adding Game Mode, Desktop Widgets
Updated: Dec 18, 2023
You can look forward to trying out new features and functions on your Mac device with the roll out of the latest macOS update.
Apple announced today macOS Sonoma is now available, adding Game Mode and interactive desktop widgets, among others.
The update supports MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini models from 2018 onwards, iMac and Mac Pro devices from 2019 onwards as well as the Mac Studio from 2022 onwards and the 2017 iMac Pro.
If your Mac device is eligible, you can install the update by heading to your System Settings. Once you're there, click General, then find Software Update and click it to start the download and installation process.
One of the highlights of the update is the addition of Game Mode for Apple Silicon devices. Game Mode lets you enjoy smoother and more responsive gaming by giving your game top priority in accessing CPU and GPU performance. It can also double the Bluetooth sampling rate, reducing input and audio latency for wireless game controllers and AirPods, when turned on. Apple said Game Mode works with any game, including titles like Death Stranding Director's Cut, Stray, Layers of Fear and SnowRunner.
Another highlight is the added functionality of desktop widgets. Previously, you could only place widgets in a sidebar that you had to drag in from the side of your screen. Now, you can place them anywhere on your desktop, keeping the information you need in view whenever you need them. What's more, they're now more interactive than ever and aren't limited to only displaying information.
Elsewhere, macOS Sonoma also adds new screen savers featuring breathtaking vistas, ranging from landscapes to underwater wonders.
Additionally, the update allows you to have separate profiles when using Safari, so you can keep your personal and work browsing activity separate. Private Browsing also benefits from added protection against advanced techniques used to track you, with windows now becoming locked when not in use.
Other additions include an updated login screen, enhancements to videoconferencing, which includes new effects, smarter Notes and Reminders apps and improvements to autocorrect.
