Apple Developing More Powerful, More Expensive iPhone Ultra
Next year’s iPhone lineup could feature an all-new model – one that could prove to be pricier and beefier than the iPhone Pro and Pro Max.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a new, higher-end flagship iPhone to draw further distinctions between its different models. And the Cupertino tech giant could take a page out of Samsung's book for the brand name, with it opting to call the new model the iPhone Ultra. The company has used the Ultra branding before, as Gurman points out, specifically for its sports-focused smartwatch and the top-tier version of the M1 processor.
While Gurman didn't share details about the specs and features, he expects the top-of-the-line model to include a faster processor, more capable camera sensors than the Pro and Pro Max and a larger display. He also said it could drop the charging port, which perhaps hints at a holeless design that takes advantage of wireless charging.
As for the iPhone Ultra's release, Apple is said to be considering launching the new model alongside the 2024 iPhone lineup.
Apple CEO Tim Cook in a recent earnings call said the rising prices of the iPhone aren't affecting consumer sales. “I think people are willing to really stretch to get the best they can afford in that category,” Cook said, adding that the iPhone has become "integral" to people's lives, with it being used to make payments, manage health and control smart appliances among others. His comment hints that the company is willing to continue to see how much consumers are willing to spend to access the features they want and need, thus the development of the iPhone Ultra.
Gurman, however, noted that one feature that Apple won't implement in iPhones in the near future is a foldable display. He said for now, the company is focused on larger foldable devices, such as ones the size of laptops. And if a foldable iPhone were to ever be put out, it would likely cost more than any of the current models currently available. Then again, if Cook is right about consumers’ willingness to spend, that iPhone could still sell in spite of its steep price.
