U.S. Cyber Panel to Probe Risks in Cloud Computing after Microsoft Email Hacks

[Edited] A U.S. cybersecurity board will investigate potential risks in cloud computing services following the recent hacking of government email systems hosted by Microsoft Corp, according to a Bloomberg News report.

The investigation by the Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB) will focus on vulnerabilities in identity and authentication systems used by major cloud providers, including Microsoft. It comes after suspected Chinese hackers allegedly stole cryptographic keys to access Microsoft's cloud email platform this year.

Hackers used that access to spy on senior U.S. diplomats and officials, including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. The hacks have prompted scrutiny of Microsoft's security practices.

In July, Senator Ron Wyden asked federal agencies to take action against the company. Last week, the House Oversight Committee announced an investigation into China's suspected role in the email system breaches.

The CSRB will examine risks across all major cloud providers, not just Microsoft. The company and CISA have not commented publicly on the investigation.
