Sony Beta Testing 1440p Resolution for PS5

Sony today released its latest PS5 beta software that adds 1440p resolution support. This allows testers to select and use the new video output if their display supports it. The PS5 currently only supports 4K and 1080p resolutions.

PS5 owners have long been begging Sony to add support for the resolution, which is the middle ground of sorts between FHD and UHD. The resolution is usually the optimal choice among those who play on monitors instead of TVs.

Sony says if a game supports 1440p output then it’ll be selected as the native resolution. If not, it’ll at least benefit from improved anti-aliasing via supersampling down to 1440p, resulting in some sharper visuals. However, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is limited to 4K and 1080p, and won’t be supported at 1440p. VRR lets the display sync its refresh rate with that of the game, reducing the chance of experiencing screen tearing and smoothening visuals as a whole.

Apart from this, the software update adds gamelists, a new feature that gives players the ability to organise their collection of games. It’s essentially a way for players to classify their games into different folders. They can, for example, add all their favourites into one gamelist. Each list can include up to 100 games, including digital, streaming and disc, and up to 15 lists can be created by a single profile.

Sony is also testing new social features, such as an option to request friends to share their screens. Meanwhile, when you join a party, there’s now a notification that’ll let you know when you can join a friend’s active game. Players can also send stickers and voice messages in parties.

These features are expected to be rolled out to all PS5 owners in the coming months.
