We might have finally found the most powerful all-in-one laptop. The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 holds the title of being one of the most powerful in its class, yet it doesn't shy away from being the priciest, setting you back nearly $5000.
The Surface Laptop Studio 2 packs the latest 13th Gen Intel processors and Nvidia GeForce RTX 40-series graphics. This combination of powerful components delivers improved performance and genuine competitive power. Additionally, the laptop features a dedicated Intel Movidius neural processing unit (NPU), which handles local AI tasks, such as the ability to enhance video-calls.
The device boasts a sleek anodised aluminium chassis, but the weight may not make it the ideal on-the-go companion. It does feel a bit heavy at 1.98kg, more suitable for moving around at home instead of bringing it out.
Despite being labelled a workstation, it pulls double duty as a game station, hitting an impressive 70 fps in Forza Horizon 5 at extreme settings.
Venturing into its innovative features, the pull-forward touch-screen seamlessly transforms the laptop into a drafting tablet, perfect for artists and designers. It features a 14.4-inch touch-screen display with a resolution of 2400x1600 pixels. While it may not have the visual impact of OLED displays, it still offers a sharp and vibrant viewing experience.
When paired with the Slim Pen 2, it's a dream for seamless sketching and note-taking. The magnetic pen storage below keeps the pen securely in place, ensuring easy wireless charging. However, the Slim Pen 2 is sold separately for a whopping S$210, adding to my dissatisfaction.
Connectivity options are ample, with USB-A and microSD ports, complemented by a cleverly located magnetic stylus holder for easy access.
The battery life is commendable, easily handling a full day's work, and fast charging ensures you're back in action swiftly. But, when compared to other laptops geared for on-the-go use cases, there are many better options available.
With a starting price of S$3,569 for the entry-level variant and a price of S$4969 for the top-of-the-line variant that I reviewed, the price point firmly places it in MacBook Pro territory. It’s relatively expensive, but if you can cough up the cash, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 offers the versatility and power you need to bring your ideas to life, whether you’re an artist, designer or content creator.
