According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Rockstar Games, a division of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., plans to announce the highly-anticipated next entry in the popular Grand Theft Auto franchise as early as this week, with the first trailer dropping in December as part of the studio's 25th anniversary celebration.

The trailer would likely premiere at The Game Awards on 7 December, but that hasn't been confirmed yet. What's also unconfirmed is how much of the game would be shown off or detailed in the initial announcement and the first trailer.

The timing of the game's announcement is not by accident, however, with Take Two reportedly slated hold an earnings report this Wednesday.

Rockstar has been very tightlipped about Grand Theft Auto VI since confirming that it was in development in February 2022, so there's close to no official information about the game yet. It could have remained shrouded in mystery if not for a massive leak last year that saw in-development gameplay footage being uploaded online.

The leaked footage, which was first uploaded to GTAForums and later trickled to YouTube and Twitter, showcased robberies and the gunplay.

Rockstar later confirmed that the footage from the leak did indeed show an early build for the game, but stressed that the development won't be affected.

A different leak also claims Grand Theft Auto VI would be set in a fictionalised version of Miami and would feature two playable protagonists, one of which is a female Latina character.

The announcement of a new Grand Theft Auto game is a big deal for the gaming industry, with Grand Theft Auto V being one of the best-selling video games of all time. Statista reports that as of August 2023, Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 185 million units worldwide.
