The search engine giant today unveiled the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, boasting a range of upgrades over last year's releases.
Both models come equipped with the new Google Tensor G3, which is the most powerful Pixel chipset yet. Google touts that the chipset features advanced aritifical intelligence (AI) capabilities, with the biggest machine learning model on the Pixel 8 being up to 10x more complex compared to the Pixel 6. These innovations in AI improve the new handsets' image-processing capabilities as well as bring high-definition phone calls, among other features.
The two models also feature modern designs with softer silhouettes, new finishes and stylish new colours. The Pixel 8 Pro is available in Bay, Porcelain and Obsidian, while the Pixel 8 is available in Hazel, Rose and Obsidian. Google adds that they were also designed with durability in mind, with the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 featuring Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, respectively.
The Pixel 8 Pro comes equipped with what Google claims is its best Pixel camera system yet, consisting of three pro-level sensors, including a 5x telephoto lens. The improvements allow the handset to capture better low-light photos, sharper selfies and Pixel's best zoom and video yet.
Sometime after launch, Pixel's new Video Boost technology would also deliver HDR+ and enhanced colour grading for professional-looking videos, plus Night Sight Video for the first time ever.
Meanwhile, the Pixel 8 has two rear cameras that work in tandem with the image-processing and editing features of the Pixel 8 Pro. With Macro Focus, for instance, the smallest subjects can be blown up, capturing details that might not be visible in a regular photo. There's also other software-based features that enhance the photography experience like Best Take, Audio Magic Eraser for video and Magic Editor for photos.
For display, the Pixel 8 Pro sports a high-resolution 6.7-inch Super Actua with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, while the Pixel 8 sports 6.2-inch Actua display with an improved refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.
The Pixel 8 Pro, for first time ever in a Pixel release, also features a thermometer. This enable users to get the temperature of various objects like beverages and cookware by simply scanning them with the handset.
Other features include Google Assistant support and Pixel Call Assist, which reduces background noise during calls to make conversations more audible.
Google additionally promises seven years of OS and security support for the two new Pixel handsets.
The Pixel 8 Pro starts at S$1,549, while the Pixel 8 starts at S$1,099.
