Glitch! AR and VR, Fab or Fad?

With the hype of the metaverse, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies have become trendy and exciting again in recent years. Meta, or Facebook as it's affectionately known, have made significant investments in the creation of AR and VR content, as well as improved and made their Quest headsets more affordable. Since then, Apple has also jumped on board with their Vision Pro headsets. Although Apple's Vision Pro is not for everyone due to its higher price, it does show users how interactive and immersive AR & VR can be with Apple's Midas touch. AR and VR also have the potential to revolutionise various industries and create new opportunities, but is this technology truly revolutionary or just a passing fad?

AR and VR: Fab or Fad?

The conversation around adopting AR and VR has been gaining momentum, with many companies considering the integration of these technologies into their operations and promotions. But these technologies are still relatively new, and the adoption rate among consumers is not yet high. So it is important to approach this adoption with caution, and it is crucial for companies to understand the potential benefits and match them with their products or services before diving into the world of AR and VR.

Cost of adopting AR and VR

One of the main barriers to entry for AR and VR is the cost. Only well-resourced companies are able to invest in these technologies, as they can be quite expensive. From the software components to the devices themselves, there is a significant investment required. Additionally, training employees to use these technologies effectively is essential.

On the consumer side, the weight and bulk of AR and VR headsets continue to make them uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time. Another disadvantage is the short battery life.

Negotiating Harms

Another factor to consider is the potential harms and concerns associated with the incorporation of AR and VR into our daily lives. As the real and virtual worlds become more intertwined, issues such as privacy, safety, and addiction must be addressed. Companies and individuals must be aware of these potential hazards and work to mitigate them. However, because adoption is still relatively low, there is no need to panic.

The Promise of AR and VR in Bringing the World Closer Together

Despite the challenges and concerns surrounding AR and VR, there is a promise that these technologies can bring the world closer together. AR and VR have the potential to create immersive experiences that transcend physical boundaries. They can enable people to connect and interact in ways that were previously not possible, bridging the gap between different cultures and geographies.
